Motorists are advised a $1.35 million road rebuilding project will start next week on Cabbage Tree Road at Williamtown.
The NSW Government has provided the funding to upgrade a 1.6 kilometre section of Cabbage Tree Road to reduce ongoing maintenance costs and improve motorist safety.
Parliamentary Secretary for the Hunter Scot MacDonald MLC said this was an important project for Williamtown.
“The Williamtown precinct is a growth area, especially as Newcastle Airport expands in the years ahead with international services and the stationing of Joint Strike Fighter squadrons at RAAF Williamtown” Mr MacDonald said.
Port Stephens Council will carry out the work on behalf of Roads and Maritime Services. The site has been established this week with major project work starting on Monday 9th October, weather permitting.
This work will be carried out between 7am and 5pm Monday to Saturday and is expected to be completed by Friday 1st December this year.
Changed traffic conditions will be in place during the work, including detours for westbound motorists via either Richardson Road towards Raymond Terrace or Nelson Bay Road toward Newcastle from Monday 9 October.
Motorists are advised to plan ahead as the detour is expected to add up to 20 kilometres to journeys, which is about 20 minutes travel time.
Access will be maintained for residents and emergency services.
For the safety of workers and motorists, there will be some temporary traffic changes to ensure the work zone is safe, including lane closures and a reduced speed which may affect travel times.
Motorists are advised to follow the direction of traffic control and electronic message signs and keep to the reduced speed limits.
Roads and Maritime thanks the community for its patience while this important work is carried out.
