Parliamentary Secretary for the Hunter Scot MacDonald MLC has announced a big bash league style cricket match for international students will be held at the University of Newcastle on Sunday as part of a StudyNSW and CricketNSW project.
Mr MacDonald said StudyNSW, the NSW Government organisation that supports the international student sector, is investing in 10 partner projects across the State to improve the international student experience.
“Cricket NSW has received $55,000 in co-funding from StudyNSW as part of its partner project initiative to deliver Sixers Smash – a series of cricket events for students in locations across NSW,” Mr MacDonald said.
“The Newcastle Sixers Smash game tournament will be held (weather permitting) at 9am on Sunday 5th November at the University of Newcastle’s Oval 1.
“The winning team will progress through to a final against other Sixers Smash Champions from other universities on Sunday 26 November in Sydney.
“This event will be a great opportunity for overseas students to meet and engage with the Newcastle community to help them feel at home here in the Hunter.
“It will help break down barriers between international and domestic students and encourage international students to engage fully with our community.”
Sydney Sixers General Manager Dominic Remond said: “The Sixers Smash will create an exciting opportunity for international students to get their mates together and join in Australia’s favourite sport, one of summer’s oldest traditions.
“We’re also delighted to offer a number of students the opportunity to intern with Cricket NSW and experience sports administration while studying at university.”
