Parliamentary Secretary for the Hunter Scot MacDonald MLC today announced that the 2018 Newcastle Writers Festival will benefit from $70,000 in funding from the NSW Liberal National NSW Government through funding from Hunter Development Corporation and the 2018 Flagship Event Fund.

Speaking at the Program Launch in Newcastle this morning, Mr MacDonald said that $20,000 would be provided from the Flagship Event Fund managed by the State’s tourism and major events agency Destination NSW, which provides grants to support marketing activities that drive overnight visitation. $50,000 in sponsorship has also been forthcoming from the Hunter Development Corporation as part its Revitalising Newcastle project.

“I am delighted that the Newcastle Writers Festival will receive funding from Revitalising Newcastle and the 2018 Flagship Event Fund” Mr MacDonald said.

“The Festival is an important event on the Newcastle cultural calendar and contributes to the ongoing revitalisation of Newcastle.”

“This is the 6th edition of the Festival and each year the audience has grown.”

“We look forward to welcoming many more visitors to Newcastle as a result of this exciting event, helping to further position our region as a must-see destination in NSW.”

"This is the second year the Festival has received much-needed support from this fund and it will greatly assist us in spreading the word about our event beyond Newcastle,” Founding Festival Director Rosemarie Milsom said.

Minister for Tourism and Major Events Adam Marshall said Newcastle Writers Festival was one of 35 events and festivals across regional NSW that will receive grants through the 2018 Flagship Event Fund.

“The 2018 Flagship Event Program features events that reflect the unique character, culture and attributes of their local community,” Mr Marshall said.

“We know that support for events helps to promote our State’s fantastic destinations while putting more heads on beds, diners in our restaurants and shoppers in our boutiques. I look forward to welcoming more visitors to our regions next year for this fantastic event program.”

The Flagship Event Fund offers annual grants of $20,000 or a triennial grant of $27,500 each year for three years and is part of the expanded Regional Flagship Events Program.
