Scot MacDonald
ORGANIC COLLECTION GRANTS FOR THE HUNTER
19th May 2018

Parliamentary Secretary for the Hunter Scot MacDonald MLC today announced applications are now open for grants worth up to $1.3 million to councils in the Hunter to introduce and enhance kerbside organic bin collection services.

The funding is available through the sixth round of the Organics Collections program, delivered through a partnership between the Environment Protection Authority and NSW Environmental Trust and part of the Waste Less, Recycle More program.

These grants are available to councils for the purchase of bins and kitchen caddies and for education to introduce new food and garden waste collection services in local communities. Funding is also available for investigating food waste collections in multi-unit dwellings.

Additionally, for the first time projects that involve collection of food waste from businesses will also be eligible for funding, with up to $500,000 available for 50% of the cost of collection vehicles and bins.

“These grants provide the chance to make a real difference when it comes to diverting organic waste from landfill,” Mr MacDonald said.

“Previous projects have provided new or improved green lid kerbside collection services to 500,000 more homes in NSW and have transformed an estimated 140,000 tonnes of food and garden waste into high quality compost.”

“There is $8 million in grants available over three rounds under this program, in addition to the $19.4 million already allocated.”

“These grants have also been upgraded to encourage more Sydney councils to trial food waste collections in multi-unit dwellings and encourage more collections that service businesses producing food waste.”

“NSW has committed to the National Food Waste Strategy and its target to reduce food waste by 50% by 2030. These grants will help contribute to achieving that goal.”

A webinar detailing how to apply for business collections will be held on 16th May.

Applications close on 28th June 2018. For more information on the organics collections grants and webinar visit https://www.epa.nsw.gov.au/working-together/grants/organics-infrastructure-fund/organics-collections
