NEWCASTLE INNER CITY BYPASS

The NSW Liberal National Government will construct the full interchange of the final section of the Newcastle Inner City By-pass adjacent to John Hunter Hospital.

Minister for Health and Minister for Medical Research Brad Hazzard, said the $13 million for the second access to the Hospital builds on $280 million already provided by the NSW Government to construct the fifth section of the 3.4km Newcastle Inner City Bypass between Rankin Park and Jesmond.

“The interchange will improve traffic flow across the western suburbs of Newcastle and connect key regional destinations, including Bennetts Green, Charlestown and Jesmond shopping centres, John Hunter Hospital, Newcastle University and the Pacific Highway,” Mr Hazzard said.

“It will also establish an alternative path of travel to the hospital in case of emergency or critical incident.”

NSW Health contributed $13 million towards road upgrades in and around the John Hunter Hospital campus, including additional ramps, to connect the interchange with the hospital precinct.

“I want to thank medical and nursing staff of John Hunter for emphasising to me on my visit to the hospital a few months ago, the importance of the interchange”.

Parliamentary Secretary for the Hunter Scot MacDonald MLC said the full interchange is a great outcome for patients, visitors  and staff of the John Hunter Hospital campus.

“I am grateful the NSW Government has been able to respond to clear messages from the community. I also want to thank NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian who took a personal interest in ensuring this key piece of infrastructure was the best possible for the people of the Hunter.”

Hunter New England Health Chief Executive, Michael DiRienzo said “I welcome today’s announcement by Minister Hazzard and Parliamentary Secretary Scot MacDonald as we believe a full interchange is the best solution for John Hunter Hospital. It will make access to this busy hospital campus more efficient for patients, visitors and staff.”

The full interchange provides for additional access points, including as far south as the Central Coast and also from the Lower Hunter via the M1 and Hunter Expressway. RMS has undertaken extensive design and modelling for the final link of the By-pass. They will be releasing their plans in the near future.

The John Hunter Hospital is a principle tertiary centre and community hospital for Newcastle, Lake Macquarie and Northern NSW and currently generates about 15,000 trips per day through the main entrance off Lookout Road.
